It may only be March, and it might seem like a ways away, but the warmer weather means that summer will be here before we know it. Considering that the most popular times to move are between May and September, summer is better known as “moving season.” Getting ready for a summer move can be busy and a bit stressful, but our moving company in Virginia Beach has plenty of ways to help.
Summer is meant to be enjoyed, not spent stressing and sweating over cardboard boxes in the sweltering sun. After all, who wouldn’t want to be at the beach instead of trying to carry and pivot your favorite sofa up two flights of stairs?

Drinking lots of water might not seem as soothing and relaxing as an hour-long massage, but this is a crucial step of caring for yourself when you’re preparing for a move. Especially in those humid Virginia Beach days, moving will be approximately 1,000 times worse if you’re dehydrated. Take water breaks, don’t move too much (or too fast) on an especially hot day, and listen to your body.
As just a few other notes, it’s important to drink water well before the moment you start feeling thirsty. If you start feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or are experiencing a headache, take a moment to sit down, sip on some water, and try to cool off.
Do a little bit every day.
Imagine that perfect summer day where the sun is high, the sky is blue, and the scent of the ocean is calling you to relax and unwind at the beach. Now imagine having to spend those perfect days indoors, cramped among boxes and feeling frustrated and exhausted at having to clean and move everything around. There’s practically nothing worse than having to spend a gorgeous summer day indoors, which is why our moving company recommends doing a little bit of the moving process every day.
Once the nights cool off, try tackling just a few things (or even just one thing) off your list of to-dos. All your smaller efforts will add up over time, and will make the big day go by much more smoothly.
The way we see it, moving is kind of like a delicious steak dinner — much more enjoyable when you take your time and savor each bite, instead of scarfing it down as fast as you can. Doing a little bit of the moving process at a time is also a great way to make the actual move go by faster, meaning you have more time to do the things you love.
Build in some time for relaxation…
Summer is the time for enjoying life to its fullest, but one consequence of this mentality can leave us feeling exhausted and overbooked. Add moving on top of that, and you’ve got yourself a jam-packed schedule with little room for taking a breather. This can lead to feeling overwhelmed and frustrated, and this isn’t a particularly ideal emotional state for anyone to be in.
Before you actually move, you’ll probably be tired from the packing, the cleaning, and the organizing. Even if you have to schedule it, plan at least an hour or two where you can have a break, and do anything that relaxes you. Grab a book and read outside, watch an episode of your favorite show, take your dog for a nice walk, or watch the sunset on the beach. Whatever helps you collect your thoughts and feel more emotionally prepared for the big move is an excellent thing to practice during this otherwise busy time.
And speaking of building some time in for relaxation, you should also build some time in for something else:
You’re moving, and that is a big deal! This is the end of an important chapter in your life. Regardless of if that chapter was an amazing one, an emotional one, or a turbulent time, it’s still important to reflect on all that has happened. Take a moment to journal about everything that has taken place, as well as write about the lessons that you’ve learned throughout this era. You’ll find it’s a great way to process everything now, as well as serve as an excellent piece of nostalgia years down the road.
As another form of reflection, taking pictures of your house or apartment can also be a great way to remember your place. This can be especially helpful if you know this move is going to be an emotionally challenging one.
