If you’re planning a long-distance move, or if it’s just a mild local move from Norfolk to Virginia Beach, you’ll still need to ensure that your utilities and other necessities are all ironed out before you head over to your new place. Don’t be bashful. Call the utility company more than once to make sure they’ve got your move-in date right before you arrive and find that your lights aren’t turning on because they thought you were coming tomorrow. Unfortunately, sometimes moving is more than packing up your things and moving it all across town.
Get Out The 404
Actually, whatever multipurpose cleaner you want to use will work, as you’ll need to give your new space a “once-over.” It’s likely that there are dust, dirt and other unknown debris around your new home and it’s better to get those removed before you start unpacking your boxes. We’d even go so far as to recommend doing this before Scott’s Oceana Moving’s services are completed or scheduled if you can. This will ensure that you can get the entire area spic and span before placing your things within.
Download A Designer App
Though it’s unorthodox, we recommend downloading one of the interior designer apps that lets you take a picture of your space and rearrange the furniture virtually before you move into your new place. Most apps have a visual that you can save and show to our professional movers to show them exactly how you’d like the room set-up. This will cut down the time of your move and any potential miscommunications between you and the movers. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Create a Schedule
It’s easy to get the furniture organized, pull the necessities from most of the boxes and let other boxes sit. Every move seems to be punctuated by boxes populating all your entire living space for far longer than you intended. We recommend making an after-move schedule that picks up maybe a week or two after you’ve gotten moved in and settled. This schedule should detail how you’ll fit in some unpacking in between your daily tasks that you have to do anyway. This will reduce how long those boxes plague your living room and make it awkward for visiting guests to navigate your floor plan, or where you keep the hand towels.
Organize The Closet
If you can organize little pieces of the house here and there, you’ll manage to reduce the stress surrounding the whole move. Finding little nooks and crannies that are kept neat will inspire you to clean up the rest of the house and move those items out of their box and into the home. The more of your things that find their final placement around the house, the more it’ll feel like your house instead of this new strange place you live in now.
Collect The Receipts
If you’re moving for work or other reasons. You might be able to write your move off on your taxes. We encourage everyone to keep their receipts from their move, gather everything up, make notes about what charge is for what and tuck it away somewhere you’ll be able to find them once tax season rolls around.
